I'll be traveling to Hawaii over the next couple of days. No, it's not for a hugely well-deserved vacation, but instead for work. I'll be doing a real geeky 10Gig switch solution review for InfoWorld at the Advanced Network Computing Lab at the University of Hawaii. And yes, that acronym is ANCL--Brian thought that would be funny. Geeks. Sigh.

So until I'm settled in the lab on Thursday, posting won't be quite as regular. And yes, I travel to Hawaii over two days. It's my 15th ANCL test, and I've discovered that 6-foot 2-inch geeks suffer less if they stop off in San Francisco and see editors for a night before folding themselves back into a coach seat for another 5 hours.

And, while the work schedule is tight, I have made room for a few days of fun geek work and I'll be putting up plenty of tropical blog posts as a result. There's even a live Webcam shot of the lab, though performance is a little slow and you'll need to download an ActiveX control to see it.

But if I get hammered and post a photo of myself on the beach, do yourself a favor and look away. Fast.

Geek Travel: Ben Franklin's London House Open to Tourists

In case you've got the nerd wanderlust, I figured it'd be a good idea to posts new geek attractions at popular ports of touristic call. First one is that Ben Franklin's London House has now opened to the public. Franklin was one of this society's original nerds, so if you're across the pond and in the mood for a little old fashioned geek habitat viewing, check it out.

The house is more than just a tourist trap, however; also containing an active research and conservation program as well as periodic attractions like celebrating Ben's 300th birthday in February. You can even book tickets online for added convenience.

Check out this airline complaint letter, scanned and pubbed at RealTechNews. So funny, yet I feel so much empathy for this poor slob. Newark's my default airport, and it's a Continental hub so I know exactly what he's talking about.

It's bad enough sometimes that trains are becoming preferable. Or that electrically powered skateboard I posted earlier. Maybe tricycles or pogo sticks.

Maybe Sony could come out with noise-canceling headphones that also build a custoizable olfactory enivronment around you. Sony Stinkman. But what am I saying? They'd probably use rootkit mods to implant a permanent monitoring module in your nostrils.
