This is a cool read. Tom's Hardware's news site, TG Daily, did a close look at NASCAR's scoring vehicle. This thing is completely self-contained with tools co-engineered by AMD and HP, all with goals to generate super-accurate timing and scoring data while still being able to roll around freely on four wheels. Nice piece.

<msn:type>blogentry</msn:type><live:type>blogentry</live:type><live:typelabel>Blog entry</live:typelabel>

<dcterms:modified>2006-08-09T18:14:45Z</dcterms:modified>

It's Monday...

...so time for some bad news. Call it Schadenfreude, bad Karma or simply evil glee; but here's a quick recapping of the last couple weeks or so worth of business blights and blunders.

RIM, of course, is an obvious candidate. Losing its patent appeal means not only a potential cease and desist of Blackberry sales to new customers, but possibly a similar order to discontinue the service to existing customers. That's a kick in the stock value like few others. (Source: NY Times)

The Irish government is a close second, after investing over $40 million in MIT's European Media Lab, only to wind up with no working Media Lab, no research results to speak of, and most of all no money. Sounds like a bubble investment. If you want the deep gory details, check out the Irish government's Auditor -General's annual report.
Talk about a catastrophic hardware failure: Check out Postmark.net. Is it me, or do you have to try to crash that badly nowadays? (Source: F@#$edCompany)

Motorola cutting 1900 jobs worldwide. Happy Holidays. You guys keep firing folks and nobody's going to be able to afford your over-priced cell phone products. (Source AP via USA Today)

Coming back to bite you. Just whenn Block Buster figures everyone's forgotten, Variety reports the company turned down the chance to buy Netflix for $50 million in 2000. "Uh, esteemed members of the board...oops." (Source: Variety via RealTechNews)

Finally, Eurogamer takes a nasty look at Gizmondo's mondo financial losses. This is a little old, but damn guys, that kind of stuff went out in the 90s.
