17 February RIP: MS FrontPageFinally started reading all the marketing literature surrounding the release of Office 2007, previously known as ooo-it's-cool-Office-12. Seems that FrontPage is getting the big dumpity-do with this version--as in no more, nada, finito.
The tool's been around since the mid-90s when WYSIWYG Web design tools were all the rage. It's certainly matured since then. I've been using it as an application mockup tool quite a bit. Let's me design what an app would look like, while simultaneously creating a dummy app for marketing purposes.
But kiss that goodbye. Instead, FrontPage is being morphed into two new applications, neither associated with Office, apparently. The interface will get a facelift and then work as the foundation for SharePoint Designer 2007--which is soft of Office-related since SharePoint Server is all set to become the de facto Office 'server' with this release. And FrontPage's guts will also be spun-off into a whole new product, called Expression Web Designer, which performs the same function but won't come bundled with any Office SKUs.
So it's gone, but not really. Just from Office. I'm sure there are several hundred pages of MBA-speak floating around Microsoft justifying this. I feel bad for those who need to read that stuff. 回應 (2)
